How a Wi-Fi QR code works

The code stores your network name, password and security type. The phone camera recognizes it and offers “Join network”. Nobody has to ask for the password or type it three times because of a capital letter.

It works with the built-in camera on iPhone (iOS 11 and later) and most Android phones. On older Android phones, use Google Lens or the scan button in the Wi-Fi settings.

Steps

  1. Type the network name exactly as it appears in the list of networks, including upper and lower case.
  2. Type the password. If the network is open, choose “No password”.
  3. Almost every modern router uses WPA/WPA2/WPA3. WEP is only for very old devices.
  4. Scan the code with your own phone before printing it.

Where to put it

  • Cafes, restaurants, hotels: on tables, at reception or in rooms. Staff stop dictating the password.
  • Offices: guest network at the entrance or in meeting rooms.
  • Home and rentals: a fridge magnet or a framed card in the guest apartment.

Security

Your password never reaches our server, because the code is generated in your browser. Keep in mind that anyone who photographs the code can join. For public places, use a separate guest network. If you change the router password, make a new code.
